Not only will we train athletes for competition…we train them for life.”

That’s what Enhance U stands for and a part of “training for life” is learning the value of giving to others. It’s a lesson several Enhance U trainees learned by participating in the PLUS 5K Run on Saturday in Covington – an annual fundraiser for the 5th and 6th grade overnighter that is run by the PLUS (Parents Learning To Understands Students) Organization.

The PLUS Organization was started in 1987 by Covington resident Jay Meyer with a primary focus of helping children make healthy life choices and building self esteem. It educates the children on the dangers of substance abuse, bullying and other negative influences that could affect their lives and the lives of others.

The opportunity to participate in such a cause is something Enhance U owner, Tramain Hall, couldn’t pass up as he promoted the event to the athletes and adults he trains on a regular basis. Those who registered and participated in the 5K Run received an Enhance U t-shirt.

And on a cold, damp morning, a large group of Enhance U runners took to the streets of Covington among a record 260 participants. Some raced competitively and others went at their own pace – all for a good cause.

Three Enhance U participants earned medals for their respective ages groups, but at the end of the day everyone was a winner.

What defines the junior running back from Wayne High School is heart, determination and commitment.

“Everybody says Kenny’s too small, but he has the mindset that he’s 6-4,” said Tramain Hall, who trains Kenny at Enhance U. “Morning, noon and night, this kid works hard. He’s going to prove people wrong.”

Which Kenny did at the 2013 Nike Football Sparq Combines in Massillon, Ohio recently as he ranked in the 99th percentile of all athletes tested with a 107.70 certified rating.

The rating was determined by testing the athletes in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, peak power, agility and the power ball throw. Kenny ran the 40-yd dash in 4.65 seconds (96th percentile), had a 40.0 inch vertical (99th percentile), recorded a peak power of 7,580 watts (97th percentile), ran the agility course in 4.15 seconds (99th percentile) and had a distance of 36.0 feet in the power ball (93rd percentile).

As impressive as Kenny’s performance was at the Nike Combines, his numbers in the weight room are equally impressive. He bench presses 300 lbs, squats 675 lbs, power clean 315 lbs., and has a standing broad jump of 10′ 4″.

Ouellette stands on the podium at the 2013 OHSAA State Wrestling Championships.

Covington wrestling coach, Tom Barbee, and some of his wrestlers won’t have to talk A.J. Ouellette into going out for the wrestling team next year – not after a fourth place finish at the state tournament as a junior.

“Yep, I’m wrestling next year,” confirmed Ouellette with a grin on his face after completing a surprising run in the state wrestling meet. “Next year I have to try to get back here and win it all. I’m even going to try to talk more kids to go out.”

After being prodded by teammates Kyler Deeter, Brian Olson and Ben Miller to wrestle, Ouellette entered the sectional tournament with a 25-10 record and faced an uphill battle to even get out of sectionals.

But Ouellette peaked at the right time, taking runner-up to eventually state champion B.J. Toal of Troy Christian at sectionals and then earning a birth at state with a third place finish at districts.

“In the beginning of the season he tried to muscle some kids,” said Covington coach Tom Barbee. “Right around sectionals he started to understand how to set things up and utilize the tools he has, his speed and athletic ability.”

Not expecting much at state, Ouellette surprised even himself by opening the tournament with a win on Thursday and then winning two out of three matches on Friday to advance to the consolation semifinal against Jacob Worthington (47-6) of LaGrange Keystone on Saturday.

And like he had done previously, Ouellette stunned his opponent with a takedown in overtime to claim a 5-3 win.

He then faced a familiar foe in the consolation final, Armani Robinson (50-2) of Greenview, the same wrestler who pinned Ouellette in the championship semifinal at districts.

This time Ouellette made things much more difficult on Robinson by forcing the action against the Greenview wrestler, but Robinson was just too seasoned and too slick for Ouellette and handed the Buccaneer wrestler a 9-4 defeat.

Still, it didn’t diminish Ouellette’s overall performance in his first state tournament as he ended his season with a 37-14 record.

“We’re proud of him,” said Barbee. “We’re proud of all of the kids this season. A.J. finished on the podium and that’s a credit to his hard work as well as the hard work of his teammates for pushing each other in the wrestling room.”

And Ouellette’s performance, along with the experience of wrestling at the state meet for Daniel Jennings and Jake Sowers, capped a great season for Covington wrestling.

“Absolutely,” Barbee said. “We had a state placer, two state qualifiers and four state alternates. That’s a pretty good run.”

And Barbee looks forward to next year with Jennings and Ouellette returning with state experience and a talented roster of kids capable of making their own mark as well.

“We have some kids who are capable of getting here (at state),” Barbee said. “It depends on how hard they are willing to work.”

Work has never been an issue for Ouellette and he is already chomping at the bit to get started on another athletic quest.

“Now it’s time to try and make it to state in track,” he said. “I’ll get back to working out and get ready for track and football – just get better for all sports.”

A.J. works out at Enhance U under the tutelage of Tramian Hall.

There’s no rest for athletes like A.J. Ouellette.

A.J. Ouellette isn’t old enough to remember the “Bo Knows” commercials by Nike in the early ’90s – the commercials that present Bo Jackson as a multi-sport athlete – everything from a racecar driver, to tennis player, baseball player and then football star.

Twenty years later, A.J. Ouellette is the high school version of Bo Jackson, an athlete who excels in everything he does.

Consider, as a sophomore Ouellette ran 11.1 in the 100 meter dash with a severely strained hamstring, narrowly missing out on going to state by inches. Then, this past fall, Ouellette earned all-state honors after rushing for 2434 rushing yards and scoring 46 touchdowns for the Covington Buccaneers’ football team.

Now, the Buccaneer junior has added another accomplishment to his athletic resume – a state qualifier as a wrestler.

And he qualified in just his second year of high school wrestling by taking third in the 182 pound weight class at the DIII District Wrestling Championships at Kettering Fairmont High School over the weekend.

“I don’t know very many moves because I haven’t wrestled very long, but I try to stick to what I am able to do,” said Ouellette. “A lot of these guys I wrestle have been doing it so long and know so much more than I do, so it’s hard sometimes for me to stay out of positions I shouldn’t be in. But I’m learning.”

Ouellette wrestled for a couple of years as a youth under the direction of Randy Sowers, but didn’t return to the sport until last season – a season in which he wasn’t fully healed from a shoulder injury suffered during his sophomore season in football. Surgery ultimately prevented Ouellette from competing in the post-season wrestling tournaments.

“The thing with A.J., he hasn’t had as much experience as the other guys,” said Covington coach Tom Barbee. “With him, we focused this year on keeping things simple, doing the basics well.”

And he’s learning fast as evident by the fact that he beat two of the three sectional champions in his weight class to take third at districts and claim his spot in the state tournament.

A.J. Ouellete trips his opponent for a takedown at the district wrestling meet on Sunday.

First, Ouellette opened with a 3:03 pin over Nick Clune of Coldwater. He then upset the champion from the Bluffton Sectional, Kalub Jones (36-3) of Purcell Marion by the score of 4-2.

After falling to last year’s state runner-up wrestler Armani Robinson (45-1) of Greenview in the championship semifinals, Ouellette avenged an early-season defeat to Dylan Williams of Brookville to ensure a trip to the state tournament.

Still, Ouellette wasn’t done by any means as he shocked Bluffton’s Josh Conley, the Lima Sectional Champion, in the consolation final by the score of 8-1.

“A.J. started coming on after the LCC tournament,” said Barbee. “The last few weeks he has beaten some kids that pretty much dominated him earlier in the year.”

Which makes Ouellette surprised he’ll be wrestling at the state tournament over the weekend.

“I never expected this,” said Ouellette of his birth to the state wrestling meet. “I wasn’t even suppose to be here (at districts). I was planning on running an indoor track meet in Columbus this weekend.”

Actually, Ouellette wasn’t even planning on wrestling this season. Instead, he wanted to focus his attention on getting bigger and faster for the upcoming track and football seasons.

“I wasn’t going to wrestle because I wanted to work out for football and do some open track meets,” Ouellette continued. “But some of the guys (teammates) talked me into it and Coach (Tom Barbee) said I could still do some open track meets if I wanted, as long as they weren’t on the same day as a wrestling meet.”

And Ouellette has been able to juggle a strenuous schedule, which included working out several times a week after wrestling practice at Enhance U under the tutelage of former NFL player, Tramain Hall.

“A.J. works very hard,” Barbee said. “He does a lot of extra stuff, maybe not extra wrestling, but a lot of extra training to make himself a better athlete. The training he does with Tramain translates into all sports, with the muscle memory, explosion and agility, and it’s made him a better overall athlete.”

It’s also made him a much better wrestler.

“Definitely,” Barbee agreed. “The muscle memory needed in wrestling comes from a lot of the extra work he does. The weight room work here at the school, the stuff he does with Tramain – it all translates to the wrestling mat. Conversely, what we do in the wrestling room translates to the other sports like football and track – all the sports he plays.”

Which is why Barbee loves to see kids like A.J. Ouellette in his wrestling room.

“Wrestling isn’t his favorite sport, and that’s OK,” explained Barbee. “But he’s a perfect example of a kid who can come in here (in the wrestling room) and help out the team. That’s why (Kyler) Deeter, (Brian) Olson and some of the other guys were after him to come back out for wrestling this year – to help the team.”

And Ouellette was the ultimate beneficiary of his decision as it not only made him a better wrestler, it made him a better athlete.

“Now I’m glad I chose to wrestle this year,” A.J. said. “I wouldn’t get to experience this (going to state) if I didn’t.”

It also puts his name on the wall under the list of state qualifiers.

Which is just another milestone for an accomplished athlete.

Samantha Cash, a junior volleyball standout at Miami East High School in Casstown, Ohio, earned the highest accolade in her sport by being name All-American by PrepVolleyball.com, along with her older sisters, Abby.

The Cash sisters were two of just six Ohio players selected as the top 150 players in the country after helping lead the Lady Vikings to a second straight DIII State Championship this past fall under the watchful eye of their father and head coach John Cash.

“That’s a big accomplishment,” said John Cash, the Miami East volleyball coach. “With all of the great players in the country, we were shocked when we heard both of the girls made it (All-American).”

Even with all Samantha Cash has accomplished over the past two years of high school – two state championships and All-American status – the 6’0″ setter and outside hitter has taken her preparation for the 2013 season to another level. The senior-to-be began training at the Enhance U Sports Performance Academy in January to help her improve in all aspects of her game – explosion, quickness, strength, agility and endurance.

“It’s a different level of training,” explained John Cash. “Sam loves it. Tramain (Hall) has a unique ability to bring out the best in an athlete and his workouts are so diverse that it never gets monotonous or boring.”

And the results are already showing on the court.

“She played in a J.O. (Junior Olympic) tournament recently and you could see she’s much more explosive,” continued Cash. “There were college coaches there who seemed very impressed. It’s exciting to think of where she could be after another six months of this (Enhance U Training).”

Perhaps another All-American season looms on the horizon.

Lane White, a junior at Covington High School, competed in the prestigious SPIRE Scholastic Showcase Track & Field Meet in Geneva, Ohio over the weekend and finished with a 50.06 in the 400 and a time of 22.82 in the 200 meter dash.

The SPIRE Scholastic Showcase is designed to give top athletes in Ohio and the surrounding region an opportunity to compete in front of many NCAA Division 1 college coaches. Due to this, athletes were required to submit times to determine the field, which is limited to the top 20-24 athletes per event.

Lane entered the meet with the 12th best 400 meter time of the 24 competitors who were selected for the event. After competition was completed, White finished with the 5th best time (50.06) out of the 24 competitors, who came from Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York and other surrounding states.

Although he rarely ran the 200 meter dash as a sophomore, Lane qualified for the event at the SPIRE Showcase and finished in the time of 22.82, good for 15th of the 24 runners competing.
